Did you know water accounts for up to 60% of the adult human body? Even our bones are about 31% water! Since we are what we eat (and drink), it is important to only drink clean water. Thankfully, 82.4% of Samarth seniors drink only RO-filtered water. We also found that only 40% of Samarth Community seniors drink the recommended 8 glasses or more of water daily. To help you make your water tastier and healthier, we’ve compiled a list of easy senior-friendly ways to enhance your water:

  1. Add fresh fruits

Eating watery fruits like watermelon, cucumber, and tomato is a great way to “eat your water.” You can mince these fruits and add them to water or refrigerate the water with fruit chunks for a refreshing experience. Citrus fruits can improve immunity and energy levels.

  1. Use an ayurvedic mix

In Kerala, Ayurvedic mixes like jeerakavellam (water boiled with jeera) and chukkuvellam (water boiled with dry ginger) are used for their health benefits. Karingalivellam, or pink water, is water boiled with medicinal tree bark known to reduce cholesterol.

  1.  Use metal water bottles

Storing water in durable, reusable metal bottles, such as stainless steel or copper, can provide health benefits. Stainless steel bottles can be washed with hot water and are safe from germs. Copper bottles have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.

  1. Use clay pots

During summer, store water in clay pots or ghadas to keep it cool and refreshing. Water from clay pots improves metabolism, lacks toxic chemicals, and prevents acidity. It is interesting to see that 11% of Samarth seniors mentioned they already use ghadas to store water.

  1. Add herbs

Basil, ginger, tulsi, cilantro, and mint can be added to water to infuse it with their health benefits. Boiling water with these herbs or using herbal tea bags is another option to enjoy the benefits.

  1. Add mineral drops

Mineral drops available in the market can be added to water for additional minerals. However, it’s important to consult a physician before using them, especially if you have any health conditions.

  1. Sprinkle some Himalayan sea salt

A pinch of mineral-rich Himalayan sea salt can be added to drinking water. It provides various health benefits like relief from respiratory diseases, better digestion, and improved sleep, but should be used in moderation.

Remember to drink at least 8 glasses of water daily, adjusting the quantity based on weather and exercise levels. Include other liquids, watery fruits, and vegetables in your diet. Set reminders to drink water regularly and consider infusing it with the mentioned add-ons. Moderate exercise can also help remind you to stay hydrated.
