It is good to use technology and a few gadgets to ease our lives as we age. It is not like building a dependency on these gadgets. However, certain situations may require such solutions to make lives better. Thankfully, the gadgets market for seniors has exploded more after the Covid-19 pandemic. Many seniors living without a family for company realised the power of having such gadgets at home. Typically, the gadget categories span independent living and assisted living. Whether daily living aids, mobility aids, bathroom aids, or smart living, many products hitting the market are adding value to the lives of seniors. It helps them live a dignified life. Some of these are medical aids that help seniors track their basic health parameters, remind them to take medicines on time, etc. Let’s look at a few gadgets.

Automatic Pill Dispenser

With an automatic pill dispenser, you no longer need to rely on anyone for your daily medicine doses. The latest pill dispensers come with audio and visual alerts and dispense at the right time to avoid errors and confusion. These are easy to set up, run on battery, and have large LCDs that help seniors. Some come with basic features, and some have advanced features such as blocking unauthorised access, attached magnifying glasses for a close-up view, easy refill options, etc. Some have LED lights beeping on the correct slot to ensure you take the right pills. If you program it once, you can continue using it till your prescription changes, in which case, you can reprogram it. Most products are durable and last for a year or so.

Fall Detector

Once in a while, you get to read in the newspaper about some senior person staying alone who took a fall and couldn’t reach out for help. A fall detector device is a blessing in disguise for seniors, especially if they live independently without family. It is a fact that our chances of falling are high as we get old. It could be due to balance issues, eyesight issues, etc. A fall detector on our bodies can accurately detect a fall and send alerts to the right people to ensure that they check up and do the needful. Some smartwatches also have this feature. Some intelligent devices allow the user wearing the device to deactivate any false alarms. You can connect these devices to an app that makes calls in case of a fall. It could be a lifesaver in a few cases if the people become unconscious or immobile after a fall.

Safety Sensors

Many safety sensors available in the market today are like a safety net for seniors. Whether detecting intruders or alerting you about gas leaks, various useful sensors abound today. You can even attach sensors to doors and windows to sound you about someone opening them. These sensor systems can be connected to your phone so that you can track it even when you are holidaying away from the city.

These days, smart home system companies can provide you with a complete smart home solution to take care of many aspects. They will do an audit and set up what is required to ensure that you feel safe and in control. These can also include smart lighting and surveillance video systems.

Safety Alarm/Panic Buttons

Do you feel unsafe while going for early-morning walks or running late-night errands? There are small devices that look like keychains that you can carry with you, and they can surprise anyone trying to misbehave or attack you. As soon as you press an SOS button, a loud 120-decibel alarm rings out, so the attackers get taken aback, and anyone else in the vicinity is alerted to check on the sound. The activation and deactivation are easy. Some come with attached LED lights also.

Medical Aids

Medical aids such as heart rate monitors, BP monitors, blood sugar monitors, oximeters, etc., are now a must in the home kit of seniors. These can help you avoid unnecessary hospital visits. However, check-ups at least once a year or as designated by your physician are essential. These are more like support aids to help you track your health parameters to seek timely help if required.
