We take this opportunity to bring the big happenings in 2023. These events are apart from the annual events across the world, whether cultural, sports or otherwise.
Coronation of King Charles III and Camilla, Queen Consort
The Queen of the United Kingdom, Queen Elizabeth, passed away in September 2022 after a reign of 70 years. Her coronation took place in 1953, following her father’s death. And now, King Charles III’s coronation will happen on May 6th, 2023, at Westminster Abbey, as announced by Buckingham Palace. Camilla, the Queen Consort, will be crowned alongside the King. A global live telecast of the event is likely, as it is a rare event happening in a long time.

State Elections
In the run-up to the 2024 general elections, we will have state elections coming up in Tripura, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Karnataka, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Mizoram, Rajasthan, Telangana, and J&K. None of these dates are out yet. However, if you are in any of these states, to make sure that you can cast your ballot, kindly ensure that your Voter ID is valid and that your name is part of the electoral rolls. Watch out for the date announcements by the Election Commission of India.
2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup
The FIFA Men’s World Cup 2022 just concluded in Qatar. In an extraordinary display of skillful football, Argentina outplayed France to win the World Cup after a gap of 36 years. You can catch the Women’s football World Cup from 20th July to 20th August 2023. Australia and New Zealand are co-hosting this tournament. The playoffs will happen in February 2023. You could plan to catch a match live as part of a holiday.
2022 Asian Games
The Asian Games happening quadrennially should have gotten over in September 2022 in Hangzhou, China. However, the event was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic since travel to China was difficult. Thus, the 2022 games will happen between the 23rd of September and the 8th of October, 2023. The participating members from various countries will participate in 42 events. The live telecast of events will happen, and you can catch many Indian athletes competing for glory.
ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup
The quadrennial ICC ODI World Cup will happen in India during October and November. Ten teams will compete against each other in the round-robin playoffs before proceeding to the quarters, semis, and final. As always, live telecasts will happen for the matches being held across the country, though the exact dates, venues, etc., are yet to be announced. Watch out for Matches in your city.
FIH Men’s Hockey World Cup
This tournament takes place in Odisha, India, from the 13th of January 2023 to the 29th, with 16 teams competing for the glory of the Hockey World Cup. India is also scheduled to participate and is currently in Pool D with England, Spain, and Wales. Belgium is the defending champions. You could combine a live match with an Odisha tour to see the Puri Jagannath Mandir, the beaches, or the Konark sun temple.
ICC Women’s T20 World Cup
The Women’s Cricket T20 World Cup will be held from the 10th of February to the 26th, in South Africa, with ten teams vying for the World Cup. Ticket sales are online. You could book tickets for a South Africa safari tour and also watch India play.
Women’s IPL
The men’s IPL has been happening for quite a few years now. With some good performances from the Indian women’s team, there has been a clamour for a women’s IPL. It is finally happening in March 2023, with the modalities still being worked out. The men’s IPL is set to start on the 1st of April.
IAAF World Championships
These days, we have a lot to look forward to in the Athletics championships, with Neeraj Chopra raising our hopes. The IAAF championships are happening from 19th August to 27th August 2023, in Budapest, Hungary. It is a great time to visit Europe as the winter would be over, and you can combine sports with leisure.
Grand Prix of Bharat
For motorsport lovers in India, the first Bharat Grand Prix (moto GP) will be held in India, in 2023. The Buddh International Circuit in Greater Noida will be the venue.
G20 Summits
During India’s presidency of G20, India will host a few summits. The main summit will happen from 9th-10th September 2023 in New Delhi. The list of invitees will include the 20 permanent G20 members, other invitees, and around 10 to 12 world bodies. Other events are happening across the country in Kolkata, Pune, Thiruvananthapuram, Bengaluru, Mumbai, Chennai, and so on.
