Do You Need to Change Your Spectacles?

The one common mistake we make is to not to go for periodic eye check-ups. We settle down with our prescription glasses and believe that the power may not change. However, many factors attribute to change in our vision and the power of the spectacles most often keeps changing. At times, it progresses or in a few cases, regresses as well.

When we use the same spectacles for a long duration, there are chances that our eyes may find it strenuous. This is because the spectacles may not suit the purpose as the vision has changed. Without realising, you are struggling, squinting, and more. However, all you need to know is that it is time to visit your eye doctor and probably change the spectacles. Here are 6 signs you need to know when your spectacles need a change.

  1. Headaches

When the vision changes, one of the first indications that we get is headaches. If we are exposed to a lot of screen time or read a lot, this is very noticeable. The more you use your eyes, the more it feels the strain and it results in headaches. This is because the brain is acknowledging the extra effort put into the vision. The headaches may be recurring and the pattern may be different for different visions. Farsighted people may experience headaches after peering closely over something. Headaches in front of the eyes, brows, or over the head are experienced by people with near sight.

  1. Blurred vision

Another indication of changed vision needing new spectacles is blurred vision. This symptom may not always be due to a change in the power of the spectacles. However, if this symptom manifests, you should head to the eye doctor without fail.

  1. Eye Fatigue

When the eyes are having to put in extra effort to see, it causes fatigue. You feel the strain around the eyes. Eye fatigue may also be caused to due to lack of sleep or too much screen time. However, if accompanied by one or other of the symptoms mentioned here, it could be an indication of having to get a new prescription for your glasses.

  1. Squinting

Without knowing it, we all squint when our eyes need to put in more effort to see properly. It is the most natural of improving focus to see properly. While we may end up seeing better for the time being, in the long run, it causes harm to the eyes. Vision problems worsen and other symptoms also start appearing. Hence, if you feel that you are squinting or someone notices and mentions that you do, you should immediately go for an eye check-up.

  1. Light sensitivity

If your eyes react to changes in lights, whether indoors or outdoors during any time of the day, it needs attention. Light sensitivity could indicate a simple issue of change in prescription glasses or something more complex. It needs a proper diagnosis which only a qualified doctor can do.

  1. Issue with glasses

At times, you need to change your glasses, not because of any troublesome symptoms, but because there are issues with them. There could be scratches on the glasses that are interfering with your vision. It is never a good idea to use scratched glasses as it does interfere with our vision, though we may not realise it.

If you notice any difficulty while cleaning the glasses or find some changes in their texture, it could be due to wearing in the coating on these. Most modern glasses come with scratch-proof, UV and blue light resistance, and dust repellence. These coatings can wear over time. That’s when you would need to change the spectacles.

Some of us prefer to stick to the same frames for a long time. However, at times, it becomes totally out of fashion. If you need to look different, or fashionable, perhaps, it’s time to pay a visit to the store to check out what’s new. In any case, most prescription glasses need a change once a year, best determined by your eye doctor. Hence, ensure that you do not miss out on the eye check-up schedule.
