It is not without reason that many people prefer to take nature trips for rejuvenation. There is scientific evidence to prove that nature has a lot of health benefits for seniors. It reduces anxiety, improves their energy levels, gives immunity a boost, enhances focus and concentration, and thus overall helps in healthy longevity that’s why getting back to nature is a great idea for seniors. Though most cities have some green spaces, they are not enough to provide seniors with the full healing power of nature. Seniors should take advantage of whatever nature they can access to remain healthy and happy. Here are some recreational activities close to nature that seniors can use for getting back to nature.
Walking
Take a walk in some green space daily to try and get at least some percentage of nature’s immense health benefits. The walk could also double up as a social activity if you have some others joining for the walk. Moreover, most doctors advocate at least ten minutes of walking as a bare minimum exercise to stay fit, if nothing else. Wear comfortable walking shoes, find safe walking paths, and ensure you carry some drinking water. Also, make sure to take your mobile when you step out so you can reach out to near and dear ones in an emergency. If it’s possible, find new paths around your living area to keep your interest alive to explore.
Bird watching
Another activity that is quite enjoyable for seniors is bird watching, and you can do it without much ado. Most cities have a few lakes where birds perch. You may also find some forest areas on the outskirts where seasonal birds come. Many outdoor clubs organise bird walking in such areas as a one-day activity. You could learn to identify the birds and their migratory paths, season, etc. Combine this nature activity with photography to get some splendid pics you can share with family and friends.
Photography
No age is too old to start some hobby. Photography is great hobby to help you stay close to nature. You could choose to click on evening walks, during bird walks, or take weekend trips to some nearby mountains or beaches. Even the night city lights and life make for some great photographic subjects. However, it is nature that gives the maximum satisfaction. If you can afford it, you could invest in a good camera and one or two lenses, enroll for some photography classes and make the best out of this hobby. If not, even simple clicks with a good mobile are good enough to experiment and learn.
Gardening
Gardening is an immensely satisfying activity. It involves nurturing plants, and you could make the best out of it by growing organic veggies at home. It can be a family activity if you can get kids and grandchildren also to participate in identifying the plants, planting them, watering them, etc. Put your balcony or terrace to the best use. Also, figure out some indoor plants that are air-purifiers as that helps reduce the indoor pollution effect. There is a wide variety of choices in gardening such as roses, bougainvillea, jasmine, hibiscus, crotons, succulents, and so on. Money plant is a favourite plant found in most households as it also has some Vastu and Fen-Shui benefits. Depending on the space and time on hand, you could pick green plants, flowering plants, or add some herbs and veggies.
Sports
Many sports such as Golf, swimming, tennis, etc. are good outdoor recreational activities close to nature. Golf courses are usually scenic places and help people unwind with friends. Recently, the Lawn Bowls sport caught the attention of everyone when our ladies’ team won the gold in the Commonwealth Games. That is another activity played on the lawns and won’t tire you out. However, before taking up swimming, tennis, or even horse riding, etc., one should consult the doctor to ensure that you are fit for it.
Overall, there are options for seniors to pick up some activities close to nature. They should look for opportunities and get this going.
