You must have noticed the buzz about the approaching Independence Day. This Independence Day is special as it is our 75th, which is why the Indian Government has come out with a lot of initiatives, calling it the Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav. In fact, there is a special site created for this event, https://amritmahotsav.nic.in/, that lists out every initiative that is associated with it. Various state governments and many government departments are commemorating this special occasion with many events. Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav officially commenced on 12th March 2021 with a 75-week countdown to our 75th anniversary of independence and will end post a year on 15th August 2023.
The themes

- Freedom Struggle – Commemorating milestones in history, unsung heroes etc.
- Ideas@75 – Celebrating ideas and ideals that have shaped India
- Resolve@75 – Reinforcing commitments to specific goals and targets
- Actions@75 – Highlighting steps being taken to implement policies and actualise commitments.
- Achievements@75 – Showcasing evolution and progress across different sectors
Citizen groups not just across the country, but also Internationally are creating events around these themes, and requesting people of all ages to participate and celebrate our 75 years of independence.
Events
Indians across the world have started changing their profile pictures on social media to reflect our national flag, the Tiranga. There are Rangoli and Deshbhakti competitions being held and people can upload their entries to the site. The Amrit Mahotsav site also gives inputs on how people can change their profile pic on the various social media sites. The ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ theme is urging citizens to hoist the national flag between 13th Aug to 15th Aug. To help people hoist the flag in their houses/communities, national flags are being distributed through various means, including the post offices. People are also urged to put up ‘selfie with flag’ photos. Student exchange programs to help international students understand India, and school and college level programs to help Indian students showcase their potential and love for their country through various avenues are happening.
What can you do?
If you are above 60 years or above, you must either have grown up in the early days of Independent India or been born around the time we got Independence. There must be lot of memories, anecdotes and stories that you must be having to share with the younger generation. Use this unique opportunity of our 75th Independence Day celebrations to share these in unique ways with our younger generation. You must have seen how we have evolved and grown. This generation witnessed the Chandrayaan and Mangalyaan, the ICC World Cup glory second time around, etc. Surely there must have been those tough times and those moments of glory that you felt as you grew up.
Think about all those special moments big or small that you have seen and experienced in this country’s evolution. Write blogs, create videos, or use any other form of art or media you are comfortable with. Share these valuable inputs with the next generation that has now started taking a lot of interest in the country’s history. This could even be group creation where you and a few friends create something interesting that can be shared.
Apart from this, if you can and are interested, you could choose to hoist the flag in your house and share pics with your family and friends. You could also create or participate in events around the themes shared above and encourage people in your apartments, living community, etc., to bring out their creativity. Whether rangoli, flower carpet, painting, sculpture, clay modelling, or creating something out of waste, use this opportunity to bring out the best. Prose or poetry, give it a go. You or your creation might just be the next viral thing on the Internet!
